The coolest neighbourhoods and attractions in Tokyo, according to supermodel Ai Tominaga
By Cheryl Lai-Lim -
Tokyo, Japan’s capital and the world’s most populous metropolis, is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations. With incredible sights and a fascinating culture, there is no shortage of things to do, see, and eat in Tokyo.
Japanese supermodel Ai Tominaga, who is based in Tokyo, is immensely familiar with the compelling appeal of the megacity. “[Tokyo] is where I became an adult, [it’s] the city that helped me grow, and a place where all kinds of people live. This is where I cultivated my own sensibilities and values. It’s so memorable.”

The model is also a Booking Explorer, a campaign by Booking.com that aims to celebrate the mindset and spirit of travellers who embody a relentless desire to experience and explore, in spite of the challenges brought about by the pandemic.
Looking to explore more of Tokyo? Here, we got the supermodel to share some of her favourite places to visit in the city – from charming historic neighbourhoods to the best bars to drink, and more.
I’d recommend staying in the Harajuku, Omotesando and Aoyama areas, where you can enjoy pop culture, street fashion, luxury brand shops and stylish cafés.
Meiji Jingu Shrine. You can enjoy the natural beauty of Tokyo, which has been around for several hundred years.
I like Dover Street Market Ginza. Also, the cover nippon in Midtown, where you can find traditional Japanese crafts for gifts and souvenirs. I highly recommend it.
I recommend ramen, sushi, shabu-shabu and teppanyaki.
If you're looking to experience the Tokyo nightlife, Shibuya's drinking district and Shinjuku's Golden Gai are also interesting, in terms of areas.
A brand new and exciting commercial building that will open in April at Shinjuku Golden Gai (Kabukicho area).
What does travel mean to you? Do you see it as a form of self-care amidst our frenzied pace of modern-day living?
Travel is about encounters. Cities, people, chance encounters at the time, the scenery you see, the way you can face yourself and make new discoveries. Travelling is probably one way to develop yourself. Of course, there are also journeys that aim to heal. If you go a little further away from Tokyo, you can find wonderful hot springs, and I like travelling for that purpose.
