In a video filmed during her Shiseido campaign shoot, Hathaway found herself facing a common makeup woe: lips that appeared a bit flat after sitting in the makeup chair for a while. However, in the video, she then reveals her secret weapon – a hairpin.

Hathaway demonstrates how she gently taps the tip of the hairpin along her upper lip. “I went in and I sort of stimulated my lip to try and get some blood flow back there,” she explains, “to get some circulation.” This simple massage technique, she claims, helps to create a subtle plumping effect.

However, she also emphasised the importance of safety. She clarified that if you’re attempting the hack, you should be using a hairpin, not a bobby pin, as the hairpin has a smoother, U-shaped design.

More importantly, she warns viewers to be gentle and avoid overdoing it. “It’s meant to be a gentle thing that you don’t do for longer than 30 seconds,” she advises. “Don’t stab yourself! If you’ve drawn blood, you’ve gone too far. It’s not a vampire LipTok. It’s just a little something to kind of wake your upper lip up.”.
