How can I make my party a memorable celebration?
It is easier and more visually impactful to decorate a smaller area of your living space, rather than have bits and bobs all over the place. Find a nook or corner and focus on that area.
Keep the dining table as the focal point as this means you won’t block off precious floor space. A well-set table will elevate your party by several notches, and it is honestly not hard to execute.
Pick a colour palette that works with your home, and add complementary accessories to match. Everything doesn’t always have to match the colours of the seasonal theme! White, gold and silver work well too, and are less likely to clash with your existing decor.
Fresh flowers make a world of difference and don’t have to cost the earth if you’re open to some quick DIY. Create small montages on coffee tables or consoles. Plants, candles of varying heights, and some pretty baubles on a mirrored or metal tray look festive and help set the mood.
And don’t forget the festive music playlist!

What are the biggest party planning mistakes that people make?
Advance planning takes the stress out of the evening, and allows you to actually enjoy the company of your guests.
Try to do as much cooking as possible the day before the party, or you’ll end up exhausted on the actual day after having spent hours in the kitchen. If you’re ordering in, make sure to pre-order so you’re not stressing if something isn’t available on the day. It’s important to ask your guests about their food allergies and drink preferences beforehand.
Plan your menu such that you can distribute heating your food between the stove, oven, air fryer or microwave, so you have multiple dishes heating up at the same time. Do keep your serving dishes and spoons at the ready; I stack my serving ware on the counter with a postit on each dish, so I remember what to use. Think about how you’re serving the food – visual appeal is key, so don’t forget the garnishes.
Personal touches matter: Add little place cards, remember your guests’ choice of drink, and make the effort to spend a few minutes speaking with each guest individually.
Lastly, do remember to send thank you notes to your guests the next day.
What are the party trends of 2023 to take note of?
The trend of elaborate tablescapes is really catching on, with a lot more people making a bigger effort to style their dining tables or outsourcing it to specialists. Hiring private chefs, caterers and bartenders are also getting very popular, as it allows the hosts to relax and trust the professionals to deliver the best.
People have also become more conscious about waste, and are avoiding single-use plastics. Instead, they’re opting for more sustainable alternatives. There is also a greater focus on food presentation. Grazing tables and cheese platters are extremely popular. Main courses are now being served canape style, in smaller, individual portions. This looks nicer, and there is also less wastage.
