Something old, something new: Classic looks meet new beauty trends at NYFW S/S '20

Sure, clothes may be the main focus of New York Fashion Week, but the beauty looks presented on runways aren’t too shabby either. This season, we noticed one standout beauty trend: Euphoria-inspired eye looks. Starring Zendaya, the hit HBO series pretty much propelled glitter, rhinestones and graphic liners back into the spotlight. It’s no surprise then that so many makeup artists decided to take a leaf from the show’s book and recreate the show’s signature looks on the runway. But besides fun eye makeup, the runways of New York Fashion Week also saw the usual suspects: red lips, cat flicks and barely-there makeup. If it isn’t broken, why fix it? Watercolour eyes

Painterly eyes were seen on almost every other runway at New York Fashion Week. Some models wore over-the-top smears of colours on their lids, while others settled for a diffused wash of colour. The easiest way to wear this trend? Try applying a really pigmented shadow on the inner and outer corners of your eyes like the models at Chromat.

Draped blush

The 80s was a wild time, and we’re honestly simultaneously scared and excited by the return of the draped blush trend. Apply blush on the contours of your cheekbones and temple, and keep the rest of your makeup in the same colour family to avoid looking theatrical.

Rhinestone and glitter eyes

Part of what makes Fashion Week so fun is seeing the outrageous makeup looks on the runway. Naturally, things like glitter and rhinestones are a must. You can either go low-key by sticking a rhinestone under each eye, or go all out by applying glittery eyeshadow over your lids.

Graphic liners

Who doesn’t love a good graphic liner? But instead of last season’s painterly strokes, we’re all about creating interesting shapes with eyeliners this season. The easiest way to get on this trend is to do a negative space cat eye, as seen at Chromat. Or you can get adventurous and replicate the angel wings seen at Anna Sui and Rosie Assoulin.

Updated cat eyes

No Fashion Week is complete without at least three shows featuring a strong cat eye. It’s like a beauty shorthand to say that you’re fierce and not to be messed with. The classic black cat eye is always a hit, but if you want to change things up, try creating a bold feline flick with neon eyeshadow or a coloured liner.

Barely-there makeup

The no-makeup makeup look continues to be a perennial favourite, much to the chagrin of makeup enthusiasts who prefer things to be loud. We do notice that overly dewy complexions have largely been replaced with satiny and semi-matte finishes, however.

Classic red lip

You can never go wrong with a good red lip. Top it with gloss for a juicy and youthful look, keep it matte to channel an air of authority, or dab it on with your finger for a romantic, diffused look. It’s such a versatile look – no wonder makeup artists favour it every Fashion Week.

Throwback looks

Besides 80s-inspired draped blush, we noticed that a few shows sent down models wearing distinctly 90s makeup. Think smoky eyes, nude lips, brown lipstick and frosted lids. It looks like the fashion world’s nostalgia for simply times continues to march on strong, and we’re here for it – as long as platform slippers don’t make a comeback.
