Runway beauty trends can seem a little off the wall and intimidating. But when you break it down, there are often little tips and tricks that can give you fresh new ideas for your own makeup. We tend to stick to the same makeup routine that we’ve been accustomed with since we were teenagers. However, even one small tweak can make all the difference. To give you a little inspo, here are some bold yet wearable trends from the spring summer 2019 runways.
Vivid eyeshadow
When teamed with clean, glowing skin, vivid eyeshadows look ultra-modern. The look popped up on the Spring Summer 2019 runways at Rodarte and Discount Universe in New York, also in London at the Ashley Williams show. Pinks, teals and blues are especially popular, but literally no hue is out of bounds. This look is especially appealing for summer time, when flowers burst into bloom and wardrobes come to life
Make it work: If you’re worried that sweeping a bright eyeshadow over your lids is a little too close to your secondary school prom days then opt for an eyeshadow in a softer wash of colour. Another rule of thumb to keep the look modern is to keep the colour in a clean dome shape on your upper eyelid or drawn along your lower lash line and smudged out with an eyeliner brush.
Dark lips
Blackcurrant, plum, burgundy, oxblood – this season’s favourite lipstick shades are decidedly dark. Seen backstage at MUKZIN, makeup artists kept skin bare and eyes minimal at the spring/summer 2019 show, leaving lusciously deep lips to be the focal point of the look. Don’t be afraid of going to the dark side – a well-chosen dark lip is surprisingly flattering for most skin tones and immediately dresses up a casual outfit.
Make it work: Preparation is key. Before you dive into those transformative lacquered tubes, keep your lips in tip top condition to ensure a perfect application by lightly exfoliating the lips with a toothbrush once a week. This creates a smoother canvas for your dark lipstick or gloss to go on. Also, to prevent your lip colour from smudging or feathering, use a lip pencil. For a natural finish, line the cupid’s bow, top and under the lower lip and blend with a q-tip or doe foot applicator.
Not-your-usual winged liner
In addition to the classic retro cat eye being back, we also saw some more unique variations on what makeup artists did with black gel or pencil for the Spring Summer 2019 makeup trends. At Laquan Smith, it was all about the thick, strong black winged liner – a close look revealed that an additional stroke of eyeliner was added to amp up the intensity of the look.
Make it work: If you want to create an interesting shape at the end of your cat eye, use your favourite pencil, gel or liquid liner and think about the angles – it could be a square or triangle. Next, create little dots to mark where you want the shape to end up, connect the dots with an angled brush.
