You might have heard about Diastasis Recti (D.R.) from you girlfriends. Often known as “Mummy Tummy” or “Belly Pooch”, it’s something that’s often associated with post-partum women. But did you know that D.R. doesn’t just happen to women who have had kids? It can happen to women who have never been pregnant and even men too.

What is Diastasis Recti (D.R.)?

D.R. is a condition where the connective tissue in the middle of your abdominal muscles (the “six-pack” muscles) separates along the linea alba – the tissue that runs down the abdomen.

During pregnancy, D.R. can occur due to hormonal changes and increased abdominal pressure as the baby grows. This stretches and weakens the linea alba, causing the abdominal muscles to separate. However, D.R. is not exclusive to pregnancy. Excessive weight gain, improper exercise techniques, and genetic factors can also cause it.

A common misconception of D.R. is that it’s merely an aesthetic issue. However, it can lead to various health concerns such as lower back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, digestive issues, urinary incontinence, or pain during sex.

It might also affect subsequent pregnancies. Another misconception is that D.R. can be treated with just exercise or massage. While exercise can help, it must be done correctly under the close guidance of a professional, as it is risky if done incorrectly, and might worsen the condition. Massage can be a complement, but it should not be seen as a remedy. If left untreated, severe D.R. can lead to abdominal muscle atrophy and hernias.

The good news is that most cases of D.R. can be managed non-surgically with special exercises and advanced medical technologies that are safe and pain-free. While online resources provide information on self-assessment, they are often guesswork and don’t consider an individual’s medical history and lifestyle. Therefore, professional assessment and personalised care are crucial.

Georgina Tay, co-founder at Orchard Clinic, explains: “People often ask: How severe is my D.R.? Can it be healed non-surgically, pain-free, and without medication?

Many feel embarrassed to discuss it or show their body, losing confidence in their own skin or beach attire. This is why having a supportive team who knows what you’re going through while helping you through this process is so important.”
