Full of coincidence
Last Friday afternoon I put up a picture of my old cover band from NYE ‘06. I commented that in it I looked like something out of a Hieronymous Bosch painting. I searched around on Google for a while to grab a jpg of the painting that I had in mind. I knew I had seen Bosch paintings with creatures that have stripey-stocking-ed legs before, but where? I couldn’t find a damn thing. I gave up and let it go.
Then on Friday night I was going through my cabinet at work out of sheer skull imploding boredom and I came across a ton of old issues of Juxtapoz. One was from September ‘06 and had an artist featured on the cover named Mike Davis. I looked at the feature on him inside and BAM. There’s what I was thinking of when I mentioned Bosch paintings. It was Mike Davis all along!
So let’s revisit that NYE photo:

…and here are the paintings that crossed the wires in my mind…

See? Pretty sweet how that came together there. ZANY.
You can search around for Mike Davis’ art on this awesome gallery’s shitty website…
I don’t think he has a website of his own. He’s one of those “I paint because I like it and that’s it” dudes who has happened to enjoy some real nice success and acclaim. God bless those dudes who can pull that off.
Another coincidence happened last night while painting late into the night. I decided to do a small portrait of Madonna for the upcoming SoWa market. I worked on it for a little over an hour (it’s not finished). Just after the hour mark my iTunes played a tune from the Immaculate Collection.

Not just any Madonna song though….

WACKY.
Lastly, here’s some quick progress on one of the pieces for the Johnny Cupcakes show coming up.

What is it today.. Wednesday? Let the weekend begin already.
So, the painting for the Johnny Cupcakes show - it gives me really
bad flash-backs of my days in parochial school.
