Why are Gen Z couples choosing elopement over traditional weddings?
Breaking traditions
By Shazrina Shamsudin -
Tying the knot in the 21st century is taking on a new form. Instead of splashing out on traditional ceremonies and wedding banquets in Singapore, it seems like Gen Z couples are moving away from the norm, and embracing elopements as a way to celebrate their love.
According to a recent survey, Skyscanner Travel Trends and Destination Expert, Cyndi Hui, revealed that 14% of respondents have either opted for or are considering elopement weddings. This highlights a shift in how younger couples view weddings — not just as a traditional milestone, but as an opportunity to create deeply personal and meaningful experiences.
The same survey also revealed that many couples are leaning toward destination weddings, with 39% prioritising a more intimate experience, 38% seeking a ceremony that feels unique and personal, and 37% drawn to the appeal of saving on costs.
Think of it this way – you won’t feel obliged to invite friends you probably haven’t talked to in years (or relatives). Instead, you can opt for a smaller wedding ceremony with your loved ones in a more intimate setting. Plus, you’ll have a special destination to revisit in the future when renewing your vows. To top it all off, if you’re already travelling overseas to celebrate your union, why not make the most of it and roll straight into your honeymoon?
Of course, planning a wedding is never easy, especially when you’re in search of a budget-friendly destination that won’t break the bank – for you and your guests. That’s why it’s important to do your research and pick the best travel dates to avoid peak seasons. To make things easier, tools like Skyscanner’s ‘Cheapest Month’ or ‘Whole Month View’ can help you find the most affordable options.
That being said, if you’re planning to get married overseas — or helping a friend who’s ready to say “I do” — ahead, we’ve rounded up some unique destinations worth considering.
Seongsan Ilchulbong, South Korea
Why exchange your vows at the altar when you can do it atop this majestic crater? Otherwise known as ‘Sunrise Peak’, this UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its breathtaking panoramic views of Jeju Island at its peak. Surrounded by lush greenery and Seongsan Ilchulbong’s natural beauty, this spot in Jeju makes for an unforgettable experience for you and your guests.
Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
How about saying “I do” under the stars? Renowned for its beautiful night skies, Lake Tekapo in New Zealand definitely makes for a dream destination for your elopement. Alternatively, if you prefer to have your ceremony in the day, couples can consider visiting the place in mid-November to December where lupins bloom in abundance around the lake – making it the perfect backdrop for your big day.
Sapa, Vietnam
By now, you’re probably familiar with popular Vietnamese destinations like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. But did you know Vietnam is also home to Sapa, a hidden gem celebrated for its breathtaking natural landscapes and serene beauty? Nestled within lush greenery and towering mountains, Sapa offers a breathtaking backdrop for a wedding ceremony that’s as serene as it is unforgettable.
Picture this: exchanging vows in the heart of Muong Hoa Valley, where terraced rice fields cascade down the hillsides like nature’s own wedding décor. What more could you ask for?
Skaftafell Glacier, Iceland
If you’re looking for a wedding destination that’s a bit more adventurous and off the beaten path, consider Skaftafell Glacier in Iceland. Home to the largest glacier outside the Polar Regions, it offers an awe-inspiring setting for a wedding like no other. With its stunning icy landscapes and dramatic beauty, it’s the kind of place that turns your big day into an unforgettable adventure.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China
The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park isn’t just a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it’s also a unique and unconventional spot to tie the knot. In fact, the stunning landscapes here inspired the floating mountains in the iconic movie Avatar, making it a truly otherworldly backdrop for your wedding day.
Couples can exchange vows at the top of Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, with the jaw-dropping, mist-covered peaks and the famous Avatar-like formations as their witness.
