By now, you'd probably be familiar with South Korean actress, Han So-hee. She first got her big break when she starred in the popular K-drama series, The World of Married, where she played Yeo Da-kyung and she also took on the role of Yoo Na-bi in the Netflix show Nevertheless.
After experiencing unprecedented popularity, the star also took on the role in the hit K-drama series, My Name, which sees the soon-to-be 29-year-old actress in an edgier role. Of course, there's more than meets the eye with this starlet. She recently starred in Jungkook's highly anticipated music video Seven, where the two were seen engaged in an argument during what appeared to be a ‘date.’
Having started her career in 2006, it's safe to say that Han So-hee is definitely a star on the rise. To find out more interesting facts about the actress, keep on scrolling.
The wait is officially over. BTS' maknae, Jungkook, recently released his highly anticipated video, Seven, and fans all around the world are buzzing about his new single and his onscreen chemistry with Han So-hee herself.
The rumours started after Han So-hee, was seen arriving in South Korea at the same time as Jungkook on June 22. It was also said that the two were filming the Seven music video in Los Angeles.
Aside from this single, the actress has appeared in other music videos, namely SHINee's Tell Me What To Do, Jung Yong-hwa's Girls Do It and Roy Kim's Let's Stop It.
Everyone knows the actress as Han So-hee, but did you know that her family name is actually "Lee"? The actress hasn't revealed the real reason why she changed her family name after being an actress, but if you're following her socials and her personal blog, you'd notice that the star would occasionally use her family name, Lee, for some of these accounts.
If you’ve watched My Name, you would’ve known that Han’s role in the show is a physically demanding one. To get into character, the actress worked with professional martial arts directors and gained 10kg of muscle from all her training. In fact, the actress also took it upon herself to carry around a knife just so that she could get used to the feeling and feel more comfortable playing the part in the series.
Han attended action school to get used to the movements and gestures for the show’s action scenes. She said: “I learned that I’m not all that graceful in moving my body. I had to attend action school every day of the week. But I became more motivated as I saw the gradual changes in my body, movements and gestures. It wasn’t easy, but the team at the action school really prepared me. So I felt less pressured in performing the action scenes than the emotional scenes. Accomplishing a flawless orchestration of an action scene was so rewarding. I had so much fun.”
Han mentioned that she took inspiration from different titles like Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard. “There are different styles of martial arts and one of the martial arts directors pointed out the style of Atomic Blonde which is a more long-take style,” she said. “The biggest challenge regarding action was hurting others. If I didn’t practice enough, I could hurt others and I really didn’t want that, so I practised a lot to finish the series safely.”
After gaining a following from her breakthrough drama, The World of Married, netizens started looking into her personal life and started criticising her after photos of her smoking surfaced. The star was also spotted with tattoos as well.
Ever since then, the actress received mixed reactions from the public. However, since Han wanted to become an actress, she got most of her tattoos removed.
After deciding that she wanted to delve into the world of acting, she dropped out of university — where she was an art major — and moved to Seoul to pursue her dreams. However, her passion for art never left — she still dabbles in the hobby once in a while and even uploads photos of her artwork onto Instagram.
As the drama, Nevertheless, is set in an art school, her knack for art really stood out and she was the only cast member who did not need to take additional art classes for the show. Han even got a chance to show off her art skills in a scene where her character, Na-bi, had to draw a picture. Viewers can also try to spot her art pieces which are proudly displayed in Na-bi’s room.
“The art director was very fond of her because she already knows where to go, what to do and she’s really good with all the utensils as well,” said Kim Ga-ram, director of Nevertheless, during a press conference.
While she may be enjoying the finer things in life now, the actress has been said to have come to Seoul with less than 300,000 South Korean won (S$355). According to a report by The South China Morning Post, a since-deleted article on Daum revealed that Han So-hee went to Seoul alone at the age of 19 to pursue her career. Before she made her debut in the industry, Han also worked hard to make ends meet by juggling part-time jobs.
Han So-hee’s parents got divorced when she was only five years old, so her grandmother played a pivotal part in her life in raising her over the years. On Instagram, she has posted about her grandmother twice, both pictures with the caption “My everything.”
