How can I wear a gold watch?

All-gold watches are trending again

In the past few decades, advances in watchmaking have led to the rise of alternative materials, such as stainless steel, ceramic, titanium, and platinum, temporarily overshadowing gold watches. While these materials have their merits, one can’t deny the timeless allure and luxurious heft of an all- gold timepiece.

Not sure how to pull it off? Take a leaf out of Victoria Beckham’s style book. The fashion designer, who has a collection of all-gold Rolex and Patek Philippe watches, has been spotted wearing these statement watches for all sorts of occasions, from casual outings with jeans and a simple top, to business meetings and high-profile fashion events.

A look through Piaget’s archives shows that the watchmaker-jeweller really flourished in the 1970s and 1980s at the height of Studio 54 and disco fashion. The Piaget Polo 79 is redolent of that time: It’s not just fully wrought in yellow gold, but also pays homage to the original Piaget Polo, which was released in 1979 to meet demands for a sporty yet elegant watch. The 38mm Polo 79 is a reissue of the 1979 version with modern updates, such as the ultra-thin automatic calibre 1200P1, and 44 hours of power reserve. The timepiece also marks the 150th anniversary of the brand.

Tudor is known for its hardy tool watches, but this is one Black Bay we won’t be taking anywhere near the hiking trail. The 39mm Black Bay 58 in full yellow gold with green elements was divisive when it was launched earlier in April – and it’s certainly not for wallflowers. We love the attention to detail, like the satin-finished yellow gold, which lends it a darker, more sombre look, as well as the lush, almost camo-green bezel and dial that give it a sporty touch.

The Golden Ellipse is not just a watch, it’s a piece of jewellery. Originally crafted in 1968 to reflect the principles of the Golden Section aesthetic rule (as used by Da Vinci in The Last Supper), the Golden Ellipse stands out within the brand’s exceptional launches this year. For the first time, it comes with a beautiful gold bracelet, featuring 300-chain styled links that are individually hand-crafted and hand-polished. This technique was 15 years in the making, a testament to Patek Philippe’s unwavering pursuit of excellence.

A more feminine but no less striking option is the Cartier Panthere. First released at the height of the decadent 1980s, when it found favour with the likes of Pierce Brosnan and Mick Jagger, the collection went on hiatus until its re-release in 2017. Given its diminutive size, the all-gold version makes the right kind of statement – at 23mm, it fits snugly on the wrist, and can be worn on its own, or stacked with bracelets such as Cartier’s Love or Juste un Clou.
