Singapore’s relentless heat and humidity can be a formidable opponent when it comes to looking and feeling your best. We often struggle with keeping our makeup in place, avoiding sweat stains on our clothes, and preventing clogged pores and pimples — challenges that almost everyone in Singapore can relate to.

That being said, there are ways for you to look and feel good even in the sweltering heat. Ahead, we’ve gathered five ways for you to thrive in Singapore’s weather and look your best.

1. Change up your style

This is the perfect opportunity to give your wardrobe a little revamp. It’s been said that dark-coloured fabrics do tend to trap more heat, so we recommend opting for light-coloured pieces that are lightweight, especially in Singapore’s humid weather. You could also ditch the denim jeans – sure, they’re stylish but unlike pants, they’re less breathable and are more likely to leave you feeling hot and sticky. Some of the more breathable materials for clothes include linen, silk and cotton. These are some clothing pieces you can consider:

2. Have a separate skincare routine for hot days

When we sweat, we often find ourselves getting our pores clogged due to the excess sebum produced by the skin. This may ultimately lead to other skin concerns like blackheads or whiteheads being formed.

While it’s nearly impossible not to sweat in humid weather, you can switch up your skincare routine to reduce the chances of getting clogged pores. One way to do this would be by easing up on your serums, moisturisers and day creams. In this case, you can opt for lightweight moisturisers and serums instead, which will hydrate your skin without leaving your face oily or sticky. Some lightweight options you can try include:

Ctrl-A Teatreement™ Moisturizer, $36, Dr. Jart from Sephora

Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum, $98, Glow Recipe from Sephora

3. Switch up your makeup routine

Creamy or liquid concealers will be more likely to run and disappear in the hot weather, especially after you sweat. Stick concealers, on the other hand, have a higher staying power. Another way to combat the sweat would be to use waterproof makeup products instead. These would give your makeup the staying power needed to stay sleek even in the humidity. You might also want to leave your foundation behind for a while. You could opt for tone-up sunscreens (sunscreens which correct your skin tone at the same time), or powder foundations instead. Here are some makeup products you can try out:

Beauté Concealer, $119, Cle de Peau from Sephora

Dior Backstage Rosy Glow, $69, Dior Beauty

4. Invest in a hydrating mist

Facial mists deliver a quick burst of moisture and are perfect for refreshing dehydrated skin throughout the day. Some of them also contain calming ingredients that can soothe irritated or sunburned skin. They can also revive tired makeup without smudging it. These are some facial mists you can check out:

Rose Instant Hydration Mist, $40, Fresh from Sephora

Beauty Elixir, $27, Caudalie from Sephora

5. Stay hydrated

Don’t underestimate the power of drinking water! Not only will it prevent you from getting dehydrated in Singapore’s hot and humid weather, but it also hydrates and nourishes your skin. Well-hydrated skin is less likely to overproduce oil, which is often a response to dryness. Excess oil production can contribute to clogged pores, especially when it mixes with dead skin cells, dirt, and other impurities.
