In this episode on self-confidence in the workplace, Her World’s fashion editor Lena Kamarudin and beauty editor Letty Seah share how you can confidently navigate office fashion and beauty trends to make a lasting impression.
Does how you look matter at work? According to Her World’s What Women Want 2024 survey, it certainly does. a majority of readers – 56% – feel they are judged based on their looks in the workplace.
The impact of your appearance extends beyond first impressions; it affects your self-confidence and the way others perceive you. Navigating office style involves carefully selecting outfits and makeup that reflect your personal style while adhering to professional standards.
After all, confidence stems not only from looking your best but also from feeling comfortable and self-assured in your chosen attire and makeup.
Here, Her World’s fashion editor Lena Kamarudin and beauty editor Letty Seah share practical tips to help you look and feel your best at work.
Making a memorable first impression
When preparing for a job interview, presenting yourself confidently can set the tone for the entire interaction. “A rule of thumb should be that you should dress modestly and confidently,” notes Lena.
A well-fitted blazer, a classic blouse, and tailored pants or a pencil skirt can project professionalism without being overly formal. Adding texture could also add some visual interest to the outfit. “Something classic with something that is a bit more textured. I think that juxtaposition would be just nice for a job interview.”
For makeup, a polished, natural look works best – think light foundation, neutral eyeshadows, a touch of mascara, and a nude lip. “You’d want to present the best version of yourself, so I wouldn’t recommend anything that could smudge too easily, such as a smokey eye or heavy makeup,” says Letty. This approach ensures you look put-together and approachable.
She also offers a useful tip: do a trial run of your makeup before the day of your job interview. “Just like how we do trial runs before our weddings or prom, doing a trial run of your makeup will ensure that you’re not scrambling and thinking of a makeup look on the day itself – it’s one more thing to worry about!”
Creating an everyday office look
An office-friendly makeup look should enhance your features without being overpowering. “Stick to a look that’s comfortable, hydrating and moisturising, as most of us are stuck in the office for many hours,” advises Letty. Stick to a nice, glowy base and a healthy wash of colour on the cheeks. Opt for long-lasting formulas that are smudge-proof.
“Outfit-wise, your weekend wardrobe and work wardrobe should co-exist,” says Lena. Whatever you wear on the weekend, you can wear on the weekday when you go to the office. “A good rule of thumb would be to do a casual basic like a t-shirt with something tailored.”
Nailing the presentation look
When preparing for a big presentation, aim for a look that exudes confidence while remaining professional. Choose a well-tailored suit or a sophisticated dress that fits comfortably and makes you feel empowered. “You can include your personal style in your outfits,” says Lena.
For makeup, consider a slightly bolder look – perhaps a defined eyeliner or a pop of colour on the lips – while still keeping it appropriate for a work setting. “You don’t have to do a fire-engine red to make a statement, but you can still use different pops of colour,” says Letty. The key is to balance standout elements with classic touches to avoid appearing too flashy.
Navigating casual dress codes
Casual dress codes don’t mean you have to compromise on professionalism. “In terms of beauty, your makeup and how you do your hair is like an accessory to your outfit,” says Letty. “You could be wearing something very simple such as a white tee or a shift dress, but you can still elevate that look with very neat, well-groomed hair and a very simple, everyday makeup look.”
In terms of style, Lena recommends playing with high-low options, such as pairing a pair of jeans with a crisp shirt or a pair of heels. “If you’re going to wear something more casual, pair it with something more tailored so you look more poised and chic.”
Transitioning from day to night
To transition smoothly from the office to evening events, have a statement piece ready. Lena suggests a black sequinned dress with an oversized blazer and pointed pumps for a classic touch. Accessorise with statement earrings or layered necklaces for added style.
For makeup, a bold lipstick or dramatic eyeliner can quickly shift your look. Letty adds, “Adding glitter can bring a fun element to your evening look.”
Quick touch-Up techniques
To maintain a fresh appearance after lunch, consider a few touch-up techniques. To touch up your lip colour, Letty recommends makeup wipes that contain exfoliating ingredients to remove any dead skin or leftover lunch stains. Moisturise your lips with a lip balm or oil, and then afterwards put on a fresh coat of colour.
Blotting papers can help remove excess oil without disturbing your makeup. Carry a compact with powder or a setting spray for a quick refresh, and tiny sponges can help with detailed touch-ups.
Incorporating trends professionally
Integrating current fashion and beauty trends into your office look can be done subtly. “Be discerning with the trends that you’d want to bring to the office,” advises Lena. Choose one or two trends, such as a trendy colour or accessory, and incorporate them into your outfit or makeup in a way that complements your professional attire. “Trends and looking professional shouldn’t be exclusive – they can be incorporated together,” sums up Letty.
