South Korean star Lee Je-Hoon has proved his versatility throughout his career – from a tenacious criminal profiler in hit series Signal to a hardened ex-convict in Move to Heaven. It is in Taxi Driver, however, that the actor truly shows his mastery in adaptability; throughout the series, he effortlessly switches from a screen vigilante with a cool attitude to personas such as a Chinese-Korean gangster and a countryside simpleton with a thick provincial dialect.

The 38-year-old actor offered a glimpse at his skills earlier today at his press conference. He is in town to promote the second season of the well-loved drama series Taxi Driver, which premiered on Viu last month. The sequel of the popular Korean crime thriller sees the actor reprising his role as Kim Do-gi, the taxi driver who works for Rainbow Taxi Company, a taxi group by day and vigilante group who fights against injustice by night. He is joined by returning cast members such as veteran actor Kim Eui-sung and actress Pyo Ye-jin.

Lee will also be holding his first fan meet in Singapore on March 25, as part of his 2023 Asia tour.

Clad in a chic all-black ensemble, the actor answered questions regarding filming Taxi Driver 2, his driving skills, and his favourite local dishes in Singapore. Here are some of the top insights we gleaned from the press conference.

He frequently visits Singapore

While this is his first fan meet in Singapore, this is not the actor’s first time on our island. He reveals that he has visited Singapore multiple times ever since the pandemic restrictions were lifted. “To tell you the truth, while it’s been some time since my last official visit, I’ve been here on personal trips quite frequently,” he says, sharing that he was here both last year and earlier this year.

It was, however, the actor’s first time in Sentosa (the press conference was held at Resorts World). “When I’m in Singapore, I usually walk around the city, but Sentosa is too far to walk to,” he says with a laugh, sharing that he was mesmerised when they drove into the island today.

He also shared that he “absolutely” has been to Chinatown, but he has not had a chance to explore Joo Chiat yet.

He is less lonely filming Taxi Driver 2

3/7

The actor revealed that he was “excited and grateful” to reunite with the cast of Taxi Driver to film the second season. He added that the second season was “less lonely” compared to the first season, as he had more opportunities to film with the rest of the cast members of Rainbow Taxi Company. “I was lonely in season one as I had to solve a lot of the projects alone. In season two, I have more meetings with the team (Rainbow Taxi Company) and when we’re filming together in the basement (the headquarters of Rainbow Taxi Company), I was having so much fun.”

He can effortlessly switch between various personas

4/7

Fans of season one of Taxi Driver will recall Wang Tao Zi, the aforementioned Chinese-Korean gangster persona who enraptured the heart of toothy crime madam Lim Bok-ja (Shim So-young). Wang and Lim both make a return for Taxi Driver 2, and the actor shared that “he personally does not dress as flamboyantly as Wang Tao Zi”.

The hearthrob also demonstrated how effortlessly he transitions from Wang’s greasy persona to Kim’s cool self to his own playful personality.

Speaking of Wang Tao Zi, the actor selected the character as his answer to the question of who he would choose “if [he] could only live as one character he had previously portrayed for the rest of his life”. Explaining his decision, Lee shared that “there’s unrequited love [in the character’s life] and so it’ll be exciting if I can complete the love”.

How his driving skills have changed

The actor also revealed that his driving skills have drastically changed after filming two seasons of Taxi Driver. “Before, I used to be a textbook driver,” he shares. “But now, I’ve learnt all these dangerous [stunts and manoeuvres] and [had to even] drift on my own. These days when I drive, I try to tell myself that I’m not Kim Do-gi.”
