The first step in having something to throw together is planning ahead

With festivities just around the corner, some of us may have last-minute guests visiting our home. Here are eight ways to spruce up your place in five minutes and make it look instantly more welcoming if you have unexpected guests coming over.
Put away any shoes scattered around the door, and give your doorbell and shoe bench a quick wipe-down – these are often-neglected areas that gather dust.
It’s the first thing your guests see, so put away the mail and set out a vase with flowers. Having a scented candle or reed diffuser in this area works well too, so your home smells lovely the moment they enter.
The quickest way to give your living room a refresh is to swap out the cushion covers (our tip: always have a few in rotation). If you have a neutral living room, add in a few pops of colour for a festive look.
As well as making your home look instantly more spacious, it’s also a great way to get rid of any dust or stale air.
Your guests are likely to pop in for food and water, so the kitchen should look as presentable as the rest of the home.
If you don’t have time to clean the toilet bowl, pour in some disinfectant and leave for five minutes before flushing.
Good lighting and music go a long way in creating an inviting atmosphere – set this up quickly with mood lighting, flowers, a candle or two, and a soft jazz playlist.
Part of being a great host is ensuring that your guests never have to ask for anything. Top up the water in the coffee maker and water jug, and set out some snacks in bowls that they can help themselves to.
