The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and possibly the most beautiful in the world. The great Spanish Steps are probably the finest example of Roman Baroque style. The surrounding area is full of wonderful little cafes, flower shops, artists and street performers. Visit early in the morning, before tourists arrive, for a pastry and a delicious cappuccino – a typical Italian breakfast. Get your food to go and sit on the steps until the moment feels right. Proposing early in the morning means you have a whole day to celebrate in this magnificent city.

The Giardino degli Aranci, known as the Orange Garden in English, is a 7,800 sq m park on Aventine Hill. It looks over Rome and at sunset, many have commented that the city glows like fire with intense reds and oranges, from this viewpoint. The park also sits behind the ancient Basilica of Santa Sabina church, and within it, you’ll find Giacomo Della Porta’s fountain, so there’s lots to uncover in the area. This ancient gladiatorial arena is spectacular, with tiered marble seats around the arena floor, while outside 80 grand arches tower high. At night, they are illuminated, bringing a touch of magic to the attraction. If your partner enjoys history, why not spend a day exploring Rome’s historic gems, finishing at the grandest piece of all, the Colosseum. Sneak under an arch and get down on one knee near closing time, and celebrate your (hopefully) expected response with a bottle of prosecco afterwards.

Villa Borghese is a huge landscaped garden in the centre of Rome, close to the Spanish Steps, yet remains relatively undisturbed. Inside the park are a number of museums, including the Borghese Gallery housing paintings from artists such as Raphael and Caravaggio, as well as the Rome zoo, the Biparco di Roma. The best part of the park is that couples can rent a boat and row out on the lake to a beautiful scenic backdrop of trees, flowers and sculptures. The lake is circled by a walking path Viale del Lago, and at the centre is the Temple of Asclepius. The old-fashioned row boat makes for a nice private spot to ask for a lifetime together.

The Vatican City is a tiny independent city state in the heart of Rome. Within it is St. Peter’s Square, one of the most captivating squares in the world. It was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini during the 17th century and fits up to 300,000 people. Points of interest include an Egyptian obelisk, brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula in 37 BC, and two fountains within the elliptical piazza. The square is in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, a world-famous Italian Renaissance church. Your other half will be in awe of the beauty within this square, where you can both enjoy a delicious tiramisu or gelato. We’ve all heard of hiding a ring in dessert, but what can be more romantic than finding an engagement ring in a classic Italian dessert, in the heart of the Vatican City? It’s a ‘Si’ from us.
