It’s been a hot minute since we last tuned into Squid Game on Netflix, and now, three years after its original release, the highly anticipated second season has finally dropped.

For those who are new to the Squid Game universe, here’s a quick recap: the drama revolves around 456 debt-ridden contestants who are invited by a mysterious organisation to play a series of children’s games for a life-changing cash prize. The twist? The stakes are life or death, revealing how far people will go to survive.

Earlier this December, Netflix unveiled the season 2 trailer, teasing the return of Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae (aka Player 456). But why would anyone choose to return to such a brutal game? His mission: to end the horrifying competition once and for all. Season 2 promises a fresh set of life-threatening challenges, with Gi-hun locked in a tense battle with the shadowy Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). But will he succeed in his quest to take down the twisted games for good?

Even though the new season has only just started airing, it’s already made a splash—Squid Game has been nominated for Best Drama Series at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards.

What is Season 2 about?

The official season synopsis reveals: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up moving to the States and returns with a new resolution in mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death battle with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”

Good news for fans—Squid Game season 3 is confirmed, and it won’t be a long wait. The third and final season will premiere in 2025, so we won’t have to endure another three-year gap like we did before.

In a letter to fans, series creator, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his excitement: “I am beyond excited to announce the date for Season 2 and to confirm that Season 3, the final season, will follow. The fierce clash between Gi-hun and the Front Man will continue into the series finale in 2025.”
