Mental health has become a vital conversation, with daily articles, government initiatives, and staggering statistics spotlighting the urgency of this issue. In Singapore alone, 17% of residents reported experiencing poor mental health in 2022, while a striking 25.3% of individuals aged 18 to 29 faced severe or extremely severe anxiety symptoms. Over 50% of youth between 15 to 35 years reported experiencing symptoms of depression. Despite these numbers, there’s a silver lining: many are taking steps to reach out—whether to mental health professionals or simply seeking support within their circles. It’s an overwhelming reality but also a sign of progress towards a healthier society.

Parents and adults often ask me why rates of anxiety and depression are climbing. It’s a complex mix of factors—economic challenges, the pressures of social media, social isolation, and ongoing stigma around mental health, to name a few. Yet, the question remains: are we truly happy, and how can we equip the next generation with tools for resilience and joy?

Many people are now taking control of their mental well-being. Some are visiting mental health professionals, while others turn to self-help books, breaking free from the stigma associated with seeking help. Just last week, I met a young woman with a difficult past, doing her best to build a life that frees her from it. She is taking steps—thinking, behaving, and communicating in ways that foster her growth. Stories like hers remind me that with reflection and planning, we can create a blueprint for our future. Happiness and mental health require consistent effort, and as a life and happiness coach for 15 years, I’ve seen how even small, intentional actions can foster a healthier, more fulfilling life.

As the year winds down, many of us feel a rise in anxiety, whether it’s from the stress of holiday festivities or social media posts highlighting what feels out of reach. Here’s my suggestion: treat this month like it’s already January 2025. Why wait? Set your intentions now. Begin with these simple yet powerful steps to cultivate a positive close to the year and a foundation for the future.

1. Prioritize quality sleep

Good mental health starts with quality sleep. Reflect on your sleep habits—are there small adjustments you can make? Studies show that sleeping in a dark, cool room, setting aside devices 30 minutes before bed, and creating a winding-down routine, such as meditation or gratitude journaling, can improve sleep. Try these practices, and your body and mind will thank you.

2. Break up with your phone

If you’re going to part with anything before January 2025, let it be your phone. Organize your device by deleting unused apps, setting screen time limits, silencing notifications, and setting downtime reminders. For an extra step, consider turning your screen to grayscale, which can make mindless scrolling less enticing. Reducing screen time isn’t just good for you—it’s good for those around you, too.

3. Get organized and plan meaningful connections

With only six weeks left in the year, take time to plan the rest of 2024 intentionally. Who do you want to spend time with? Who might need to hear from you? Reach out to reconnect, say thank you, or offer apologies if needed. Building meaningful connections improves well-being, leaving you feeling lighter and more fulfilled.

As you navigate these last weeks, slow down and be intentional. Mental health matters, and acknowledging that we have the power to change our circumstances is life-changing. If you’re feeling low or uncertain, reach out for support. Plan time outdoors, surround yourself with people who bring you joy, and savor the little things. Be present and let go of the past so you can step into 2025 with a lighter, freer spirit. Move forward into a new year, creating the future you want and investing in a life that brings you true happiness.
