Spoiler alert: Spoilers for episode 1 of The White Lotus Season 3 ahead. Proceed with caution if you have yet to watch.

Thailand’s Allure: A new chapter for The White Lotus

First things first: the setting. The White Lotus has always prided itself on its breathtaking locations, but Thailand takes things to another level. Director Mike White not only showcases the natural beauty of the country but also respects its culture. In fact, Thai actress, Lek Patravadi, who plays Sritala, shares that the show’s portrayal of Thailand will surprise you in ways you’d least expect. “Thai people are polite and friendly but they can be very aggressive at the split moment,” remarks Patravadi.

Homegrown actor, Dom Hetrakul, who plays Pornchai, a wellness expert at the five-star resort goes on to comment that his homeland is “beautiful and surprising.” Let’s just say that it really is the kind of immersive setting that will make you want to start planning your own Thai vacation while secretly wondering if your resort would also be the destination for chaos… no it isn’t.

Season 3 of The White Lotus transports viewers to Thailand, where spirituality plays an integral role in daily life. The season explores the theme of mental wellness, with the resort serving as a sanctuary focused on nurturing the well-being of its guests. Patravadi praises White for his thoughtful and introspective portrayal of Buddhism, highlighting the season’s depiction of various practices and philosophies grounded in Buddhist teachings. “[Mike focused on] how Americans look at religion,” says Patravadi, who values White’s respectful representation of Buddhism in the show.

Belinda’s Return: A familiar face amidst the new chaos

If you’re a fan of the first season, you’ll be excited to know that Belinda, played by the talented Natasha Rothwell, is back! For those who need a quick refresher: Belinda was the spa manager at the Hawaiian resort in Season 1, a character with deep emotional complexity who quickly became a fan favourite. This time around, she’s bringing her wit and warmth to the Thai setting, giving us a much-needed anchor amidst all the chaos.

Rothwell herself seems to have fallen in love with Thailand’s creative spirit, saying, “Thailand has never been colonised… [it has] that spirit of freedom that allows for a beautiful incubator for writing.” It’s a perfect embodiment of the show, where art, drama, and a whole lot of tension come together.

Rothwell also shared her excitement about working alongside the local Thai talent, especially when it came to the collaborative energy on set. “We all speak the language of creativity and art and making film… [it’s] a beautiful tapestry,” she reflects. You can almost feel the energy through the screen as the cast navigates this intricate, suspenseful drama, bringing their unique personalities and captivating antics to life.

Lisa steals the show

Now, let’s talk about the one casting choice that has fans buzzing: Lalisa Manobal, better known as Lisa from the global K-pop group BLACKPINK, is making her acting debut in this season of The White Lotus. She plays Mook, a health mentor at the resort who has already generated plenty of excitement. Critics and fans alike have been praising her stellar performance, with many saying her acting chops will surprise you just as much as her singing and dancing. Talk about a triple threat!

And it’s not just her acting that has everyone’s attention – Lisa clearly knows how to make an entrance. At the star-studded premiere of The White Lotus Season 3 in Bangkok, she arrived in style aboard a cruise ship, donning a custom Louis Vuitton lotus-pink gown. Her contemporary take on the traditional Thai silk attire paid tribute to her Thai roots and the rich cultural heritage of her homeland. Honestly, she looked every bit the pop royalty she is!

Darker, stranger, and more intriguing than ever

So, what can we expect in terms of the drama? If previous seasons are any indication, Season 3 will be a rollercoaster of dark humour, deep social critique, and unexpected relationships. We’ve already seen the show’s ability to peel back the layers of privilege, wealth, and human nature. This time, we’ll see how these themes collide with a new culture. The first episode begins with a bang: an eerie visual of a floating body that lingers as gunshots echo in the background. This unsettling scene sets the stage for the season’s chaotic mix of beauty and danger, hinting that even paradise holds its share of dark secrets. As the shots ring out, we see Belinda’s son, Zion Lindsey (played by Nicholas Duvernay), who recognises the gunfire, adding a layer of tension and urgency to the moment. It’s a stark reminder that this season will be filled with shocking twists and chilling turns.

One of the most unsettling aspects of The White Lotus Season 3 is the tense and disturbing chemistry between the Ratliff siblings. While some fans have speculated about a potential incestuous dynamic between Lochlan and Saxon Ratliff, it’s best to hold off those theories until more is revealed. In the first episode, the rivalry between Piper and Saxon over Lochlan, each vying for his attention, whether at the Buddhist temple or by the resort pool adds another layer of discomfort. This triangle exposes a raw, agonising view of human desire and blurred boundaries, challenging viewers to confront difficult truths. It’s yet another example of the show’s ability to reveal the darker complexities of human nature.

While The White Lotus receives it’s fair share of intriguing (and sometimes unhinged) guests, it’s always the relationships between the staff that delivers the most emotional complexity. Mook and Pornchai drive the absorbing narrative of a one-sided love story. Pornchai’s affection for her is palpable, yet it’s clear that the feeling isn’t mutual yet, setting the stage for a slow-burning and heartbreaking emotional journey. As the season progresses, you can’t help but wonder how these unrequited desires will impact the characters’ decisions and unravel their fates.

The return of one of the show’s most loved characters, Belinda, combined with the show’s newest star, Lisa, and an unexpected character comeback that will leave you craving more, are sure to reel you into the latest season. With twists that cut deep and emotional storylines that tug at the heartstrings, you’re in for a thrilling season that will undoubtedly leave you at the edge of your seat.
