Food and drinks are at the heart of every party – they’re a tangible way to show care and hospitality to your guests while bringing people together. However, not everyone is naturally gifted in the kitchen – but that shouldn’t stop you from hosting an unforgettable event
What’s your favourite holiday dish?
Lennard: Roast potatoes are always a crowd pleaser; crispy potatoes in any form are always a hit. Ann: I love making a decadent chocolate tart sprinkled with flaky Maldon sea salt for dessert; it’s rich, indulgent, and always seems to be a hit.
Did you have any Christmas traditions growing up?
Ann: Yes, absolutely! My mum started our special Christmas morning tradition, and it’s one I’ll always cherish and keep. Every year, we’d begin the day with panettone for breakfast – the smell of coffee and the soft, sweet bread makes every Christmas morning feel extra special.
Delicious cocktail recommendations?
Lennard: I’ve been drinking Palomas recently, they’re fruity and super easy to make (and drink).
Ann: My go-to cocktail is a classic French 75! It’s delicious and so simple to make – just gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and champagne. Light, refreshing, and perfect for celebrating any occasion.
What about mocktails?
Lennard: I love a mix of muddled strawberries with mint and soda water – something refreshing and light.
Ann: The Spiced Apple Cooler is amazing – chilled apple cider mixed with cinnamon, ginger, and sparkling water, served over ice and garnished with a cinnamon stick. It’s delicious and festive!
The best liquor mixers?
Lennard: I don’t have a strong preference, but a friend recently used a can of lychee soda mixed with gin, and I thought it was such a brilliant and quick way to put together a cocktail.
What food is always a crowd favourite?
Lennard: Braised meat dishes always provide a sense of comfort and put people at ease.
Ann: Sliders or mini tacos are always a hit. However, I prefer baking over cooking – mainly because I have a sweet tooth! I’d say cookies are my favourite – they’re quick, fun to make, and always a crowd-pleaser. I also dabble in brownies and cakes, depending on my mood and the occasion, but cookies definitely have my heart!
Can you suggest some easy party dips that are delicious and look good?
Lennard: Hummus is definitely my all-time favourite, but I enjoy a variety of dips. Tzatziki, guacamole, and baba ganoush are also great options.
Fuss-free food that you can serve for a last minute party?
Lennard: If I don’t have a lot of time, then I’d probably cook a claypot rice dish because they are fairly quick to put together and you can always change up the toppings really easily.
Ann: You can’t go wrong with salmon blinis with cream cheese and capers as finger food. A big charcuterie board with cheeses, jamon, fruits, nuts, and crackers is always a winner.
LENNARD’S GROCERY TIPS FOR HOSTING A DINNER PARTY OF 10
It may seem simple, but always check for your guests’ allergies beforehand. It’s a nightmare to realise that some guests can’t eat what you’ve prepared and you don’t have an alternative. Also, if you’re buying a large piece of frozen meat, like a turkey or a beef roast, keep in mind that it takes a long time to defrost, so it should be purchased well in advance.
Don’t forget to stock up on snacks! Whether it’s crackers and dip or even just potato chips, guests usually enjoy nibbling on something. Snacks can also buy you some time if there are delays with the hot food.
