The meat-free and plant-based movement in Singapore has been gaining traction in recent years, with many brands offering vegetarian and vegan food options. This is possibly due to the growing number of Singaporeans who are becoming health and environmentally conscious. According to the University of California’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability, a plant-based diet produces significantly lower amounts of carbon emissions, uses less land space for and requires 50% less water compared to one with meat.

Besides health, environmental and religious reasons, some switch to a plant-based diet for ethical reasons. Knowing that no animals were harmed in the process of producing your meal helps them embrace the meat-free lifestyle. Still, that hasn’t stopped people from seeking out alternatives. Demand for meat alternatives has skyrocketed, with the demand for plant-based pork and chicken increasing seven-fold in December 2020 compared to the same time the previous year, according to a report by abillion

Going through that transition of stepping away from meat and searching for meat-free options can be difficult. And it can pose dining dilemmas when you have to worry about whether you’ll be able to find a vegetarian option off any menu (especially when eating out with voracious meat-eating peers) or resort to being that customer who makes countless requests when ordering.

A common misconception is that a plant-based diet is bland and not nutritious enough (we’ve all heard the protein questions), but it isn’t necessarily true. So if you've sworn off meat or just having a meat-free Monday, we’ve round up a list of go-to vegetarian and vegan food spots that not only prove no meat doesn’t mean no flavour, but are totally guilt-free. And yes, it’s not all salads and greens.

1. Love Handle Burgers

1/22

Nothing beats a burger with a fluffy bun and juicy patty. Love Handle Burgers, located at Ann Siang Hill, adopts a classic American-style menu that is 100% vegan. Their Mushroom Cheese Burger ($17) is absolutely to-die-for, perfectly blending the umaminess of the mushrooms with the creamy garlic aioli (if we could bottle the sauce, we would) atop the Impossible meat patty. If you’re into a more traditional burger, go for their classic Cheeseburger ($12.50). Like the mushroom burger, it’s also made with the Impossible patty, caramelised onions, pickles and of course, vegan cheese. Double it up with their Double Cheeseburger ($19) that includes two Impossible patties sandwiched between their custom brioche bun.

Local cuisine is not forgotten with their vegan “Ramli” Burger ($15) -- an eggless frittata smothered with barbeque sauce and garlic aioli, on top of their signature Impossible patty. This is a perfect interpretation of the classic Ramly burger that every pasar malam goer loves.

Love Handle Burgers offers more than just burgers. There are a variety of side dishes to choose from: Crab Cakes ($13), Truffle Mushroom Shepherd's Pie ($10), Tempura Broccolini ($8) and more. For the veggie lovers and meat-eaters alike, we recommend giving their Cream Spinach ($7) a shot. Creamy, hearty and just delicious. They also offer pick-up, takeaway and delivery.

Note that Love Handle Burgers is not Halal-certified.

2. Greendot

2/22

With 12 locations all over Singapore, Greendot is surely one of the most popular vegetarian food chains. Their bento set ($7.90 / $9.90) lets you choose from their wide selection of meat-free dishes like the popular Lion Mane Mushroom Rendang and Braised QQ Tofu with Shimeji Mushroom and Black Fungus to go with their healthy rice options: Fragrance White Rice, Sesame Rice or Beauty Brown Rice. Their Laksa ($7.50), which is made with straw mushrooms, Konnyaku prawns and Konnyaku balls, is steeped in a hearty laksa broth (that’s made from scratch, FYI). If you aren’t a soup noodle kind of person, get their Taiwanese Spicy Dry Handmade Noodles ($7.50).

Besides Asian food, Greendot has expanded to Western cuisine with their burgers -- try the Thai Spicy Konnyaku Burger ($13.90) and the Soy Fillet Burger with Tangy Tartar Sauce ($8.50) -- and a Healthy Bowl series (only available at Bugis Junction, Paya Lebar Square and Plaza Singapura outlets) that’s completely plant-based and great for post-workout refuelling.

3. Daehwa Korean Vegetarian Restaurant

3/22

Korean food has become increasingly sought after by many Singaporeans, thanks to the widespread popularity of K-dramas and Korean pop music. But oftentimes, the food is meat-centric or includes meat. Fret not for we have found the place for your vegetarian/vegan Korean food fix. Located just above One North MRT station, Daehwa Vegetarian Restaurant offers meat-free options to classic Korean dishes, and is a sister restaurant of The Boneless Kitchen (also a vegetarian Korean restaurant).

Their Jjampong ($16) is made with an assortment of vegetables and mushrooms with a bed of chewy noodles, all steeped in a spicy broth. The Japchae ($15) is wonderfully savoury, and combines the springy potato noodles with crunchy vegetables like asparagus. Daehwa also has staple hearty stews like Soondubu Jjigae ($14) which is soft tofu stew with kimchi, and Budae Jjigae ($13) which refers to army stew. Our favourite is the Doenjang Jjigae ($14) which is made with a fermented soybean paste -- ideal for those cold, rainy nights or if you’re feeling under the weather. All their food is allium-free.

Sides include Kimchi Pancake ($8), Kimbap ($11) and a street-food favourite, Rabokki ($11).

4. Everyday Vegan Grocer

4/22

Everyday Vegan Grocer is a cafe and deli that offers a wide range of delicious vegan cakes and panini sandwiches. Their coffee is made with vegan milk (no need to pay an extra dollar for plant-based milk here) that includes oat, soy and almond.

The Grilled Portobello Panini ($12.70) comprises a generous portobello mushroom, beefsteak tomatoes and homemade basil pesto (from their own herb garden located right in the store). If you’re looking for a meaty option, give their Maple Glazed Chick’n Avocado Panini ($14.90) a go -- it is made with Heura plant-based chicken strips, and glazed in maple syrup and smoked paprika. For a sweet fix, get their Raspberry Hazelnut Tart ($8.90) or Chocolate Keto Cake ($10.90) for a decadent delight.

The grocery store includes over a thousand vegan products, from plant-based meats to vegan ice cream, as well as plant-based household products. They’ve even got vegan Laksa and Rendang paste that’s also gluten-free. Though a little inaccessible (it’s a 10-minute walk from Sixth Avenue), there’s a shuttle bus service from Sixth Avenue and Botanic Gardens. Since the opening of its physical store in late 2020, Everyday Vegan Grocer has been bringing in new and exciting products. Definitely worth a trip down for vegan food scouting, and a cup of yummy coffee and panini to go with.

5. Elemen

5/22

Elemen is known for its flavourful food and modern presentation. The food defies categorisation as the dishes draw influences from Chinese, Japanese and Italian cuisines, among others. Although diners can order a la carte, the best way to get the best of the menu might be to opt for the five-course ($23.80) or eight-course ($32.80) meal. It sounds like a lot, but one of those courses is a beverage.

Double-Boiled Maca Soup, made with the South American root, is supposed to give energy and stamina. Although the soup is made without meat bones, it has a rich, nuanced flavour that warms the belly on a rainy day.

Their Sizzling Quinoa Brown Rice is the standout of the meal. The quinoa is lost in it, but the nutty brown rice, which develops a crisp crust at the bottom of the heated stone bowl, is fantastic. Slices of mushroom, red and green bell peppers and greens make it a hearty choice. A tangy and lightly spicy sauce leaves a tingle on the tongue.

6/22

True Westies would know this gem located in the Hillview area. Many flock to Sunnychoice for their Thunder Tea Rice ($9.50) which is chock full of veggies and other healthy ingredients like brown rice, tofu and cashews. The accompanying soup is perfectly balanced and not overly bitter, which this Hakka dish can easily turn out to be. 8. Original Sin

8/22

Nestled in Chip Bee Gardens, Original Sin has been serving up Mediterranean/Italian vegetarian cuisine since 1997, and are well-known for their award-winning wine list and dishes. To start off your Mediterranean quest, get their Magic Mushroom ($18) -- baked portobello mushrooms filled with spinach and ricotta cheese, topped with a tomato basil sauce and mozzarella cheese. It’s earthy, cheesy and simple. If you’ve got a larger party, definitely go for their Mezze Platter ($22 / $32) which comprises Middle Eastern dips like hummus and walnut, served with falafel balls, pita bread and refreshing Tzatziki.

Their Moussaka ($28) is flavour-packed and hearty, a perfect marriage between a Greek classic and Middle Eastern flavours. For pasta, try their Cannelloni ($27), a popular pasta dish with spinach, ricotta and walnuts neatly packed into the pasta shells, and covered in a rich bechamel sauce. Their Absolut ($27) pasta dish -- penne pasta with asparagus, capsicums and sun dried tomatoes in a pink sauce -- is a good alternative if you are looking for a lighter option.

No dinner would be complete without a dessert (or two). Their Tiramisu ($12) and Apple Crumble ($12) is a must-have, and if you want something with more kick, Affogato ($12) is the way to go. Original Sin is ideal for an intimate dinner date or catching up with friends, as it’s located away from the hustle and bustle of town.

13. Madras New Woodlands Restaurant

13/22

The VIP Thali meal at Madras New Woodlands Restaurant in Upper Dickson Road, is an Indian vegetarian meal that is so filling, you’d want to go there on an empty stomach.

A thali is a selection of dishes, usually served on a metal platter. At Madras New Woodlands, katoris, or mini metal pots, are placed on a tray lined with a banana leaf. It is a packed tray as the small pots are placed rim-to-rim. Each is filled almost to the brim with a variety of vegetables and curries.

We’ve eaten the VIP Thali ($9.50) countless times, but what keeps the meal fresh is you never know what will be served. The chefs decide what vegetable dishes to prepare each day, depending on what they get from the market. On a recent visit, the selection includes lightly sauteed okra and a mildly spicy snake gourd fry.

There are also regular dishes that make it to the tray, including dhal made from split pulses and sambhar, a lentil-based vegetable stew. Raita, a soup-like yogurt dish filled with thick slices of cucumber, is a perfect cooling aid for the heat from some of the curries.
Carb lovers will appreciate having both white rice and biryani rice served in individual katoris.
