What to bring for your ski holiday
The essential ski trip packing list for your next winter vacation
By Shazrina Shamsudin -
By now, you’ve probably noticed that half of your friends in Singapore have either travelled or are currently travelling to ski or snowboard for their holidays. In the past few months, there’s been a noticeable spike in travellers heading to winter destinations—especially Japan—to try their hand at these snow sports, whether they’re first-timers or seasoned skiers.
If you’re feeling the FOMO and planning your own ski getaway, you’re not alone. But before you book that flight and hit the slopes, there’s one thing you don’t want to overlook—packing the right gear.
From must-have winter essentials to game-changing accessories, here’s everything you need to bring for your next ski trip.
1. Après-ski snow boots
Après-ski snow boots are important for any ski holidays. Unlike your usual boots and sneakers, these shoes provide the necessary grip when you’re walking on snowy terrains and they also give the right amount of insulation for the snowy conditions. While they are not recommended for use when you’re skiing or snowboarding, these shoes are essential for times when you’re walking to and from the different ski resorts.
2. Warm waterproof jacket
When you’re skiing or snowboarding, it’s important that you invest in a jacket that doesn’t only keep you warm but also keeps you dry. While some winter jackets look stylish and do the job of keeping you warm, you’d want to get one that will withstand the elements—think snow, wind, and moisture—while still allowing you to move comfortably. Plus, look out for jackets with pockets that you’ll have easy access to, to keep your ski passes, so you can reach out for them easily when you need to go up the ski lifts.
3. Helmet
Most ski resorts offer helmet rentals, but if you plan to hit the slopes more often in the coming years, investing in your own helmet is a smart move. Not only will it provide a better fit and comfort, but it also ensures consistent protection every time you ride.
4. Gloves
Gloves are a non-negotiable for your ski trips as they keep your hands warm while you’re going down the slopes. We recommend looking for a pair that also has smaller pockets so you can keep your ski passes in them while you’re riding.
5. Ski poles/Snowboards
If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding and you see yourself doing it over the next few years, it might be reasonable to get your own set to bring along with you for your future ski trips. The only downside is that you might have to pay for extra baggage at the airport. Alternatively, suppose it’s your first time or you’re planning to do it as a recreational activity as part of your vacation, then you might want to consider visiting any of the rental shops at the ski resorts to rent a set to save up on any additional baggage cost.
6. Waterproof ski pants
When it comes to skiing, a solid pair of waterproof ski pants is a must. Unlike your regular pants, they’re designed to keep you dry—even after a few tumbles in the snow—while giving you the flexibility to move comfortably on the slopes.
7. Thermal tops and bottoms
Temperatures on the slopes may dip on certain days, and if your usual HeatTech set isn’t enough to keep you warm, we recommend getting a fleece set that will keep you extra warm on days when it’s extra chilly.
8. Neck warmer/Gaiter
The neck area is often overlooked when skiing or snowboarding, but keeping it covered makes a huge difference. A neck gaiter or balaclava not only keeps you warm but also protects your nose, lips, and neck from the cold, wind, and moisture. Plus, it’s super versatile—you can pull it up as a face cover or even use it as a makeshift headband when needed.
9. Wool ski socks
Your gym socks may keep you warm in tropical climates like Singapore but it might not be enough for the icy conditions. Instead, invest in a few pairs of wool ski socks—they’re designed to keep your feet warm, dry, and comfortable, even in freezing temperatures.
10. Fleece jacket
If you need extra protection from the cold, a fleece jacket might just do the trick. Layer it on top of your thermal wear, before wearing your winterproof jacket.
11. Ski goggles
When you’re skiing in such snowy conditions, your visibility might be hindered because of the light reflecting off the snow. To improve your visibility, get a trusty pair of ski goggles that you can attach to your helmet.
12. Beanie
Beanies are not only seen as a fashionable accessory, but it also keeps your head (and ears) warm and protected from the blistering cold winds.
13. Wristguards
First time snowboarding? It might feel intimidating at first, but adding an extra layer of protection with wrist guards can make a big difference. They might seem a bit bulky, but trust me, you’ll be glad you wore them when you’re slipping and falling on your hands.
14. Heat packs
For those who are more sensitive to the cold, we recommend bringing along a few heat packs on your trip that you can stuff in your jacket to keep warm.
15. Sunscreen
We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen daily, but when you’re skiing, it’s essential to reapply every two hours. The high altitudes and reflective snow can intensify UV exposure, so keeping your skin protected is key to avoiding sunburn, even in cold weather.
16. Lipbalm
The cold, icy winds can leave your lips dry and chapped, so don’t forget to apply lip balm regularly. Keeping your lips moisturised will help prevent cracking and keep them soft, even in the harshest winter conditions.
