Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime affair, and it deserves to remain every bit special. Perhaps that's why modern brides today are increasingly opting to ditch the gown rental altogether and shell out a bit more for a specially-made dress to be worn on a special day.

"I wanted a dress that hasn't been worn by other brides before," says Eve Ng, a 27-year-old research analyst executive who got married earlier in January. "Even though our wedding package came with the option of dresses, I chose to save up a little bit more money so that I could get a custom-made dress."

Ng isn't the only bride who went down the made-to-order route. With her nuptials happening last December, media manager Sheryl Foo also worked with a designer for her bridal gown.

She cites that she had a particular idea for how she wanted it to look, and couldn't find a bridal studio that had a rental dress that fit with her vision. "Singaporean studios tend to favour big, over-the-top princess-style gowns, but I wanted something a little more androgynous and quirky," she says.

In the end, Foo went with a Bangkok-based designer, and made two trips to Thailand – once at the start of their collaboration to discuss her ideas and get measured up, and once more for final fittings – during the process. In between, she kept in contact with the dressmaker through WhatsApp video calls, who shared updates with Foo along the way.

Foo and Ng join a growing group of local brides who are interested in getting their dresses made just for them. If you're in the market for a custom-made frock for your upcoming nuptials, then start your search with any of these 9 places.
