By now, you’re pretty familiar with Pilates and how it’s been making waves in the fitness scene here in Singapore. With a slew of new studios cropping up across the island, Pilates has been trending over the last few months for its focus on improving core strength, flexibility, and overall body alignment.

But what if we told you that there’s another workout that you can try that’s just as effective and sculpts your entire body? Enter Lagree.

What is Lagree?

Developed by Sebastien Lagree and inspired by traditional Pilates, this workout combines the benefits of strength training, endurance, and balance into a high-intensity, low-impact exercise. However, it stands out due to its intensity and unique approach to movement. Here, instead of performing repetitive exercises, movements are done with slow and controlled pacing, maximising effectiveness.

Now, it may look easy at first glance, but the interesting thing about Lagree is that you don’t have any breaks in between each exercise, so you’re constantly keeping your muscles engaged as you work through time under tension, which helps build endurance and muscles quickly.

One other difference between Lagree with Pilates is that Lagree uses a ‘Megaformer’ – a larger machine, or some would say, a ‘sliding bench’ that’s specifically designed for high-intensity, low-impact movements.

It provides resistance in both directions and allows exercises to be performed both at the front and back of the machine. The platform is also numbered at each corner to help you with the positioning of your body for each exercise and the handlebars enable a wide range of exercises that target all muscle groups.

Much like other workouts, Lagree also has its own list of benefits for your body. In an interview with Ashley Yeo, a young entrepreneur and partner of the H-Kore Studios brand, she shares, “The core benefits of Lagree Fitness include improved strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, and body composition. It sculpts lean muscle and targets core and oblique strength, delivering a comprehensive workout.”

Suitable for all fitness levels

For some, this workout may seem pretty daunting at first, considering how “intense” it may come across as. However, Ashley mentioned that it’s actually accessible for all fitness levels. “The high-intensity nature of Lagree ensures muscles are constantly challenged, leading to strength, endurance, and core stability. At the same time, the low-impact design of the workout reduces stress on your joints and spine, making it suitable for people of all fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries or new to the exercise. Exercises can be tailored to individual fitness levels, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy and benefit from the workout,” she adds.

Contributes to long-term fitness goals

When it comes to working out, it’s essential to develop a routine that aligns with your long-term fitness goals. According to Ashley, Lagree targets the entire body, with a particular focus on the core, legs, glutes, and upper body. Its high-intensity, low-impact approach builds lean muscle, enhances strength, flexibility, and endurance. By combining resistance and stability exercises, Lagree sculpts and tones muscles, improves posture, and supports long-term fitness objectives, such as increased functional strength and better body composition.

While Lagree may still be relatively new in Singapore, with places like H-Kore Singapore only opening its doors earlier this year, it has quickly gained traction and become a standout in the local fitness scene.

Having experienced Lagree while she was studying abroad in the UK, Ashley shared more about her transformational journey and why she wanted to bring it to Singapore.

“While studying abroad in the UK, I discovered Lagree, and it became more than just a workout — it was a sanctuary where I found discipline, resilience, and confidence in myself, both physically and mentally. The method taught me the importance of self-care and empowered me to feel my best.” Having seen the lack of Lagree classes in Singapore, Ashley shared, “ I saw an opportunity to introduce a workout that I love and want to share — one that not only delivers incredible results but also helps people connect with their bodies and build confidence.”

Great for busy individuals

Suppose you’re one who constantly struggles to make the commitment of spending hours working out, you’ll be glad to know that Lagree classes are only 45 minutes each. Ashley shares, “Lagree’s efficient, full-body workout is perfect for people looking to stay fit without spending hours in the gym, and its low-impact nature makes it accessible to a wide range of individuals.”

Besides that, she also highlights the noticeable shift in recent years amongst Singaporeans who are now prioritising health and wellness. Ashley says, “The fast-paced lifestyle in the city means people are drawn to workouts like Lagree that offer maximum results in minimal time. Additionally, Lagree’s low-impact nature resonates with those seeking a sustainable and joint-friendly approach to fitness while still being challenged physically and mentally.”
